McDonalds Europe bringing self service
McDonalds Europe with Wincor Nixdorf set 2000 self service (order entry) terminals across the Europe.
Hardware and software by Wincor Nixdorf, which included screens, keypads, card payment technologies and printers. The key objective was to have a standardised device that was sufficiently flexible to be used in as many as 40 different countries. As part of the pilot 50 of the completed units have been installed in 18 restaurants in six European countries including Portugal, Austria and the Netherlands. Adnitt says the plan is to now roll out the units to restaurants based on certain criteria: "They are to be put into restaurants that have certain revenues, have a McCafe, Drive Thru's and are in certain locations."Typically two or three kiosks will be placed in each of the selected restaurants that could represent around 10 per cent of the 6,400 McDonald's restaurants located in Europe, the Middle East ands Asia

Touch screens coming to home electronics
Touch Revolution shows on CES microwave and washing machine with touch screen input. Yes no buttons only touchable display. Seems that very soon button producers loose their work. For home electronics producers it is also good: less parts, less installation, less testing, only one input device. The issue for producers will be clear user interface with smart work flow.
Of course Papa like it

Self service boom in retail
Happy new year!
NCR is the biggest self-service provider in the world. Today one of the most fast growing self-service business is retail check-outs. NCR are doing very good in this field. According to Elton Birden, the managing director of NCR in Britain: “Self-service checkouts will revolutionize retail in the same way that self service supermarkets did 60 years ago. It’s going to be a combination of existing customers rolling out and new users. It’s still a small percentage of the overall checkout.”
NCR have 80 per cent of the UK’s self-service checkouts, has predicted another bumper year in 2010, forecasting a 50 per cent increase in UK sales of the self-service scanning machines that have become a feature of stores nationwide
According to Elton Birden, the managing director of NCR in Britain: “Self-service checkouts will revolutionise retail in the same way that selfservice supermarkets did 60 years ago. It’s going to be a combination of existing customers rolling out and new users. It’s still a small percentage of the overall checkout.” Non-food retailers, and the fast-fashion market, in particular, are the next target in the march of Mr Birden’s machines. Self-service counters cost about £8,000 each, including installation, and NCR estimates that they pay for themselves in about 15 months. A third more tills can be squeezed into a store and checkout staff can be deployed elsewhere. NCR argues that the counters cut prices. “Staff can be redeployed to the shop floor, so it can actually improve service,” Mr Birden said. He argues that interaction with staff at the checkout on a convenience shopping trip is usually minimal, anyway.
Justin King, the chief executive of Sainsbury’s, recently defended the supermarket’s use of self-service checkouts. Asked on Times Online about the impact of the checkouts on customer service, he wrote: “A growing number of our customers love the speed and freedom self-service checkouts provide. They might listen to their music and not want to talk with anyone at the checkout.”
Papa thoughts: Self service in retails will be mainstream and human service will be an option, of course it takes time. People like respect their privacy, service speed and freedom - all this things provide self-service. Self service help retailers to deployed staff elsewhere and improve their business models.

2010 Year of tablet and the touch screen
E-readers, smart phones, and other new gadgets are making touch screen mainstream input technology. You don't need keyboard or mouse, less hardware take less space. Good news that touch screen popularity push prices down. And we can buy cool things like Asus eee top less than $500. Papa like it. So next year we expect hands held touch interfaces with full pc functionality for $400-800, and low price things with full web browser functions for $200-400
